Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind – yet again, a drawing lesson based on another DYNAMITE anime film/series. And as mentioned previously, this movie is straight out of the Ghibli Studio – the same place that Spirited Away originated.
While not the ‘cutest’ little creature at first site – surely after you see the movie, you’ll have a different take on these ‘Ohmus’.
On with the lesson!
First Step – A Guideline for Drawing a Simple Cartoon Ohmu
This same structure can be applied to drawing any of the Ohmu in Nausicaa. Depending on what you draw around it (how big things are) – this can really turn out to be a baby, or an adult.
Here’s how it looks…
Very similar to how I’d usually start off a cartoon lesson – animal say… the circle and cross helps to position the central aspect and ‘3Dness’ of our subject. The green oval helps us to visualize the tail of the insect as it falls in behind the foremost portion.
The orange line helps to visualize where and how the front ‘crawlers’ – mandibles!?… are positioned – and soon drawn.
And now – it’s time to do just that – draw!
Second Step – Draw Your Ohmu!!
Beginning with those mandibles, and the area around them – go ahead and bring out the lines of your Ohmu, carefully – step by step. Notice how we slowly bring forward the front of the creature, before moving to its back.
Here’s how the lesson takes shape…
Now that you’re all finished, you might be wondering — what about those missiles and other things stuck in its shell? And of course, my answer would be – add them! You can erase a few lines, and with ease – sketch in those parts that best distinguish this creature as a baby instead of an adult.
Of course – the best way to make this an adult is to change the color of its eyes to an angry red!
Well – that’s all there is to this lesson. From Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind – you now know how to draw an Ohmu!
Nice work. 🙂
